The Last of Us is HBO's adaptation of the post-apocalyptic game, with Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as a smuggler and teen crossing a ruined America. Devastating TV.
Yes. It is the best video-game adaptation yet and a superb survival drama in its own right, ideal for viewers who value character over zombie action.
★★★★☆
The Legend of Drunken Master is Jackie Chan's riotous kung fu comedy about a young Wong Fei-hung and his drunken boxing, home to some of the finest fights ever filmed.
Yes. It is essential for martial arts fans and a joy for anyone who loves physical comedy, provided you can forgive a thin plot and very broad humour.
★★★★½
The Legend of Maula Jatt is Bilal Lashari's blood-soaked Punjabi folk epic, a visually spectacular landmark for Pakistani cinema led by Fawad Khan and Hamza Ali Abbasi.
Yes. It is a thunderous, handsomely made action epic for viewers who love mythic larger-than-life storytelling; those averse to heavy stylised violence should steer clear.
★★★★☆
The Legend of the Blue Sea is a lavish Korean fantasy romance: Jun Ji-hyun's mermaid falls for Lee Min-ho's con artist in Seoul, as their Joseon past life echoes.
Yes, with reservations. A gorgeous, funny fantasy romance for fans of its stars, though the reincarnation plot tangles itself up in the final stretch.
★★★★½

Yes. It is one of the great historical dramas, best suited to patient viewers who can give three hours to a film that rewards attention with rare beauty.
★★★★½
The Lion King is Disney's hand-drawn coming-of-age epic about a lion cub and a scheming uncle, a family film with real grief, great songs and a superb villain.
Yes. It remains one of the finest animated films Disney has made, ideal for families with children around six and up and for adults revisiting it.
★★★★½
The Lives of Others is a gripping East German surveillance drama about a Stasi officer bugging a playwright, anchored by Ulrich Mühe's masterly, restrained lead.
Yes. It is a tense, humane political thriller and an ideal entry point into modern German cinema for anyone drawn to Cold War stories and moral drama.
★★★★½
The Long Season is Xin Shuang's melancholic Chinese crime drama, a 12-episode puzzle across three timelines in a declining industrial city, led by a superb Fan Wei.
Yes. A patient, structurally daring and deeply moving crime drama for viewers who value character and atmosphere over fast-paced thrills.
★★★★½
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is Peter Jackson's grand, tactile opening to the Tolkien trilogy, a fantasy quest that still sets the standard.
Yes. It is the best starting point for the greatest fantasy trilogy in film, ideal for anyone with three hours and an appetite for a grand, sincere quest.
★★★★½
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King closes Peter Jackson's trilogy with vast battles and real emotional weight, a finale that earns its three-plus hours.
Yes. It is a thrilling, moving conclusion for anyone who has seen the first two films; just be ready for a long runtime and an unhurried farewell.
★★★★½
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers splits the fellowship across Middle-earth and gives the trilogy its war film, its Gollum and its defining siege at Helm's Deep.
Yes. It is a darker, more action-driven middle chapter that trilogy fans should not skip, though it only works if you have seen The Fellowship of the Ring first.
★★☆☆☆
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is an anime prequel about a siege in Rohan, handsome in its landscapes but stiff, thin and too long for its story.
Mostly no. Devoted Middle-earth completists may enjoy the Rohan lore and the painted scenery, but most viewers will find it a stiff, overlong side story.

The Man from Nowhere is a brutal Korean rescue thriller starring Won Bin as a withdrawn pawnbroker, with ferocious fights and a surprisingly tender centre.
Yes, for action fans with a strong stomach. It is one of the best Korean action thrillers, though its villains are broad and its violence is very graphic.

★★★★☆
The Moon Embracing the Sun is a 2012 Joseon-era fantasy romance about a noblewoman lost to the palace who returns as a shaman. Lush, tearful and hugely popular.
Yes, with reservations. A sweeping, emotional sageuk romance for fans of historical K-drama, though the adult episodes never quite match the brilliant childhood opening.
★★★★½
The Motorcycle Diaries follows a young Che Guevara across 1950s South America, a warm, beautifully shot road movie that turns a political icon into a searching student.
Yes. It is a gorgeous, humane road movie that works even if you care little about politics, though viewers wanting a critical portrait of Guevara should look elsewhere.
★★★½☆
The Night Agent is Shawn Ryan's Netflix conspiracy thriller: an FBI agent on a quiet White House phone line takes one call and is pulled into a plot at the very top.
Mostly yes. A fast, old-school conspiracy thriller that is easy to binge, best for viewers who want momentum and forgive clichés and far-fetched twists.
★★★½☆
The Night Comes for Us is Timo Tjahjanto's ultra-violent Indonesian gangster thriller, with astonishing fight choreography and a story as thin as its gore is thick.
Yes, for hardcore action fans only. The fights are among the most ferocious ever filmed, but the plot is flimsy and the extreme gore will repel many viewers.
★★★★☆
The Night Manager turns John le Carré's novel into a glossy spy thriller, with Tom Hiddleston's hotelier going undercover among arms dealers across two seasons.
Yes, with reservations. An elegant, gripping spy drama for fans of le Carré and luxury-set intrigue, though its tradecraft follows a well-worn route.
★★★★½
The Office is Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's BBC mockumentary about a deluded Slough boss, a 12-episode sitcom that still sets the standard for cringe comedy.
Yes. It is essential British comedy, short enough to finish in a weekend, though anyone who can't bear second-hand embarrassment should brace for it.
★★★½☆
The One-Armed Swordsman is Chang Cheh's landmark Shaw Brothers wuxia about a maimed fighter, a raw, influential film whose melodrama and fights now feel dated.
Yes, for martial arts fans and film historians. It is a genre-defining classic with a great hero, though casual viewers may find its pace and fights old-fashioned.
★★★★☆
The Orphanage is J.A. Bayona's Spanish ghost story about a mother searching for her missing son, a classically crafted chiller with a devastating emotional core.
Yes. It is an elegant, genuinely frightening haunted-house film for viewers who like atmosphere and emotion over gore, though some of its scares follow familiar lines.
★★★★½
The Others is Alejandro Amenábar's gothic ghost story with Nicole Kidman as a mother guarding her children in a dark mansion, a masterclass in restraint and dread.
Yes. It is one of the most elegant ghost stories ever filmed, ideal for viewers who prefer slow-building dread to gore; go in knowing as little as possible.
