A profoundly humane, understated masterpiece about decency and endurance. Patient, devastating and quietly perfect.

Against the melodrama
Korean television is often associated with heightened emotion, and My Mister is a deliberate rebuke to that reputation. Directed by Kim Won-seok from Park Hae-young’s screenplay, it moves at the pace of real exhaustion — the grind of debt, of a joyless marriage, of a life narrowed to survival. Its drama is internal, registered in glances and silences, and it trusts the audience to sit inside that heaviness until the smallest gesture of care lands like grace.
Kindness without transaction
The central bond — between a weary middle-aged engineer and a young woman crushed by loan sharks and caregiving — is radical precisely because it expects nothing. The show refuses the romance the setup seems to promise, offering instead something harder and truer: the idea that being genuinely seen by another person can be a form of salvation. It is a drama about empathy as an act of will.
IU’s revelation
Lee Ji-eun, the pop star known as IU, gives a performance of astonishing restraint — a hardened, watchful young woman who has learned to expect cruelty, slowly daring to believe in its opposite. Opposite her, the late Lee Sun-kyun grounds the show in a stooped, decent weariness. Their scenes accumulate into something overwhelming.
The city of the overlooked
The series finds its poetry in the margins — a neighbourhood bar, a late-night walk, the community of failures and forgotten men who become an unlikely family. It insists that ordinary, unglamorous lives contain depths worthy of sixteen hours of attention, and it earns every minute.
Verdict
My Mister is a towering achievement of quiet television — a meditation on suffering, kindness and the dignity of enduring. One of the finest dramas Korea, or anywhere, has produced.
