Is Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald worth watching?

Mostly for completists — 52% Celluloid Score. Yates’s 134-minute Paris sequel is where the spin-off stops being a creature comedy and becomes a lore briefing: Credence, bloodlines, and a Grindelwald rally that wants to be politics.

Editorial 36 against Metascore 52 is the tell. The composite is not a rounding error. Watch the first Beasts film first if you insist; the watch order will not pretend this is essential.

What went wrong in Paris?

Plot congestion. Every character arrives with a secret the film would rather announce than dramatize. The beasts are sidelined. Dumbledore is a cameo with homework. Johnny Depp’s Grindelwald is a silhouette looking for a thesis.

There are images — the Place de Furstemberg, the amphitheatre speech — that belong to a better movie. They are not enough to carry a second hour of genealogy. If you bounced off this in 2018, the 52% is the site agreeing with you, not a recap waiting to be rewritten.

Who should skip Crimes of Grindelwald?

Skip it if you liked Newt’s case and wanted more of that. Skip it if 52% already answers. Watch it only if you are heading into Secrets of Dumbledore and refuse to be lost; even then, a recap exists.

Verdict

A denser, divisive Paris installment — lore first, creatures last. Completists only; the Hogwarts eight do not depend on it.
