Is The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies worth watching?

Mostly for Middle-earth completists — 64% Celluloid Score. Jackson’s 144-minute closer is a siege movie that starts after Smaug has already done the interesting thing. Armies arrive. CGI orcs multiply. Thorin’s sickness is the human plot hiding under the noise.

Watch it only after Desolation of Smaug. The watch order is not optional here; this film is an ending, not an entry.

What still works in a noisy finale?

Thorin. Richard Armitage’s dragon-sickness is the one psychological idea the trilogy sticks with, and the raven-crowned king on the ice is the image the film earns. Martin Freeman’s Bilbo remaining a burglar among generals is the book’s joke, kept. Billy Connolly’s Dáin is a blast of personality in a sea of digital extras.

What does not: the sense that five armies are a spreadsheet. Azog’s personal duel is a video-game boss. Compared with Helm’s Deep or the Pelennor, the geography is harder to care about because the characters were introduced as a crowd two films ago.

Who should skip Battle of the Five Armies?

Skip it if the first two Hobbit films already felt like homework. Skip it if you only wanted Smaug — he is gone. Do not skip it if you have watched the other two and need the Erebor story to end; leaving it on the gold-hall cliffhanger is worse.
