Hoppers (2026) Review: Pixar Goes Undercover as a Beaver
Hoppers is Daniel Chong's Pixar comedy about a teenager who moves her mind into a robot beaver: a funny, heartfelt eco-adventure and a studio high point.
Yes. It is a sharp, warm and very funny family film that works for children and adults alike, and a welcome return to form for Pixar's original storytelling.
Is Hoppers worth watching?
Yes. Hoppers is Pixar’s most purely enjoyable original film in years, a quick-witted animal comedy with a real heart and a clever premise that it explores with genuine imagination. Daniel Chong balances slapstick, satire and sincerity with rare control, and the animation of water, fur and woodland light is gorgeous. The small reservations are an environmental message that follows a familiar shape and a final act that leans on bigger, busier action than the film needs.
What is Hoppers about?
Mabel (voiced by Piper Curda) is an animal-loving teenager who gets her hands on a piece of revolutionary technology: a “hopper” that can transfer human consciousness into a lifelike robotic animal. Slipping into the body of a robot beaver, she discovers that the creatures of her local pond and woods have a whole society of their own, with politics, personalities and a king, Bobby Moynihan’s King George.
The animals have a problem. A smooth-talking mayor (Jon Hamm) is pushing development into their habitat, and the kingdom is preparing to revolt. Mabel, who can move between both worlds, finds herself trying to broker peace between species without losing sight of what she cares about.
Hoppers is an American animated feature in English, directed by Chong, the creator of the series We Bare Bears, in his Pixar debut. The voice cast also includes Meryl Streep and Dave Franco, and it runs 104 minutes.
Comedy with a clever engine
The hopper premise gives the film a comic engine that never runs out. Watching a teenager try to pass as a beaver, learning animal customs on the fly and bluffing her way through pond politics, is endlessly funny, and Chong uses the gap between human and animal thinking for gags that range from quick visual jokes to sharper satire. The pond council scenes, in which the animals debate strategy with great seriousness, are highlights, and the staging of these ensemble sequences shows real comic intelligence.
Chong’s background in television animation shows in the film’s timing and its affection for oddball characters. The humour is quick and specific, and the film never feels like it is marking time between set pieces.
Heart without the lecture
What elevates Hoppers above many family comedies is its emotional core. Mabel’s love for animals is not a gimmick; it drives her choices, and the film takes seriously the question of what it means to protect a place you love. Piper Curda gives her a voice full of curiosity and impatience, and her gradual growth from enthusiast to mediator is handled with care.
The ecological theme is clear but rarely preachy. Hamm’s mayor is a recognisable type, all charm and self-interest, rather than a cartoon monster, and the film’s argument about development and nature is made through story rather than speeches. Moynihan brings a pompous warmth to King George, and Streep, in a supporting role, makes the most of her time on screen.
A familiar path through the woods
For all its wit, Hoppers follows a well-trodden path. The story of a human who crosses into the natural world and ends up defending it against human encroachment will feel familiar to anyone who has seen Avatar or similar tales, and some of the emotional beats arrive when expected. The final act, while entertaining, trades some of the earlier comedy of manners for large-scale action, and a few supporting characters are more sketch than substance.
Who should watch Hoppers?
It is an easy recommendation for families with children of almost any age, and adults will find plenty to enjoy in its satire and its craft. There is some peril and cartoon action but nothing too frightening for younger viewers. At 104 minutes, it is well paced for a family audience. Stay through the credits, as there are extra scenes during and after them.
If Hoppers is a hit in your household:
- Toy Story, Pixar’s original, for the gold standard of the studio’s mix of comedy and heart.
- Toy Story 5, another 2026 Pixar release, for a franchise take on the studio’s big themes.

The verdict
Hoppers is a joyful, clever and heartfelt family film that shows Pixar can still make an original story feel fresh. Its familiar structure and busy climax keep it just short of the studio’s very best, but its humour, warmth and imagination make it a delight for all ages.
