Guides for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Is Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets worth watching?
Yes — 73% Celluloid Score. Chris Columbus’s 161-minute second year is longer and spookier than Philosopher’s Stone: flying Ford Anglia, a house-elf with a warning, and a castle that starts writing threats on its own walls.
It is second in the Harry Potter watch order. You can skip it only if you already know why a diary is a weapon; you should not skip it on a first run.
What does year two add?
Dread. Columbus still shoots Hogwarts like a Christmas catalogue, but the basilisk plot lets him use shadows, petrified students, and a girl in the walls. Dobby and the diary are the franchise’s first real “magic has politics” notes: house-elves, blood status, a memory that possesses.
It is also the last film before Cuarón rebuilds the visual language. Watch it for Kenneth Branagh’s Lockhart — a comic villain who is also a warning about fame — and for the Chamber climax, which still plays as a kids’ adventure with a corpse in the plumbing.
The runtime is the tax. 161 minutes of second-year texture includes Quidditch and polyjuice business that later films would cut. The tax is cheaper than starting on Azkaban and wondering who everyone is.
Who should skip Chamber of Secrets?
Skip it if you only wanted the Cuarón film. Skip it if spiders are a hard no — Aragog is not subtle. Do not skip it if you are introducing a child to the series; this is still the right second step after the Stone.

Verdict
A darker second year that leans into basilisk dread and house-elf lore — Columbus doubles down on wonder before Cuarón remakes the look. Necessary, slightly overlong, still the right bridge.
