A Real Pain Review: Grief, Heritage and the Cousin You Can't Fix
★★★★½ 4.5/5
A precise, deeply humane miniature about grief and the people we can't save — quietly one of the finest films of its year. Kieran Culkin is extraordinary.

The small film that holds a lot
Jesse Eisenberg’s second feature is modest by design — ninety minutes, a handful of characters, a bus tour of Poland — and its restraint is its strength. It refuses to inflate its subject into an issue picture, choosing instead to observe two cousins honouring a late grandmother while quietly failing to reach each other. The Holocaust looms; the film keeps its eyes on the living, on the ordinary ache of loving someone you cannot help.
The two poles of pain
The film’s structure is a study in contrast: Eisenberg’s tightly wound, apologetic David against Kieran Culkin’s magnetic, volatile Benji, whose charm curdles into something raw and frightening. The title’s double meaning is the whole movie — the historical pain the tour commemorates, and the private, unglamorous pain of a man drowning in plain sight while everyone finds him delightful.
Culkin’s tightrope
Kieran Culkin gives a performance of astonishing modulation — funny, infuriating, unbearably sad, often within a single scene. He makes Benji a person you’d forgive anything and worry about constantly, and Eisenberg’s writing is generous enough to let him be both the life of the room and its quiet tragedy.
Grief without hierarchy
The film’s boldest idea is its refusal to rank suffering — to insist that a personal despair is not diminished by standing on ground soaked in historical atrocity. That the two can coexist, uneasily, is the source of its aching honesty.
Verdict
A Real Pain is a small, perfect thing — tender, funny and clear-eyed about grief and the limits of love. Eisenberg directs with real feeling, and Culkin is unforgettable.
