Who is Tyler Durden?
Tyler is a dissociated personality the unnamed narrator invented — charismatic, violent, and free of the narrator’s insomnia and IKEA malaise. Other characters interact with “Tyler” when the narrator is blacking out. The twist is visual (Fincher plants single-frame Tylers early) and structural: every fight between them is self-harm.
Does the narrator win?
He reclaims agency and chooses Marla — but Project Mayhem’s demolition still happens. The film does not reward him with a restored consumer life; it leaves him awake inside the chaos he authored. That unresolved note is why the ending resists “hero wins” readings.
